Two intersecting articles on PTSD

by Ethan on January 27, 2009

As a continuation of our pledge, I will be highlighting any important articles that I come across for the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). I know this isn’t the most ‘happy’ of topics but this is where we choose to shine our little light of ‘concern’ along with 5% of our net profits.

Now for the articles…THIS ONE is an op-ed in the NYTimes about the difficulty of getting an accurate number of veterans returning from Iraq/Afghanistan who are afflicted with PTSD. The numbers are pretty eye opening to say the least and seem to grow as time goes on since PTSD can ‘hide’ for a number of months before becoming prevalent.

And THIS ONE is from the AP that talks about the intersection of nicotine/alcohol addiction and PTSD and how that can negatively affect veterans with PTSD. The article brings up a good point about how we should confront both issues at the same time as the nicotine/alcohol addiction makes the PTSD worse in the long run.

The good news is that with proper treatment, complete remission is being found in 30-50% of people afflicted with PTSD.

LOVE that you posted the positive percentage pointing out that people DO actually heal from PTSD. As a trauma survivor and sufferer of PTSD for over 25 years, I can attest that healing can eventually come: I am now into my 2nd year of being PTSD-free. I never thought it could happen, but with the right type of therapy with the right practitioner and the right attitude and dedication on the part of the PTSD experiencer there is no reason why all of us should not heal.

Now, I write a healing PTSD blog (http://parasitesofthemind.blogspot.com) where I’m running a free healing PTSD workshop. Many people are commencing/continuing their healing journey there. There’s always room for more! :)
