When trying to create something, whether a story or a new business idea or concept, there is such a fine line between patience and procrastination.
Patience is needed to give your idea time to ferment, time to find a structure and time to evolve but the difference between the time spent patiently letting these things happen versus letting that time turn into procrastination is so slim that it can happen without you even realizing it. The slip into procrastination from patience usually surrounds an obstacle, discovered problem or second thoughts you’re having about your idea in general. First of all, rest assured that anyone creating anything goes through the same reservations you’re experiencing.
So, how do we overcome? As noted before, public accountability is one way to try and combat procrastination… and there are others…
Maybe spending money on your project will keep you pushing forward… or how about a bet with someone to finish your project (another form of public accountability with money/pride on the line)… or you could even start taking orders for your idea/product before it’s even produced.
Those are all potential ways to fight off procrastination but there is a solution that is in every single one of us, part of human nature actually and it won’t cost you a dime, and that is our instinctual drive to persevere.
