Papa would be proud…

by Ethan on March 23, 2009

My grandfather, Stephen William Bull II, was on a ship in the Pacific while serving in the Navy during WWII. Prior to shipping out, he received his training at the Navy’s Sampson Training Facility in Upstate New York.

Many years later, Papa became the President and all around head honcho for the Sampson Museum, which commemorates all of the sailors who were trained there, and sits on the site where he trained which is now also a State Park. The times that his face would light up the most was when telling me about getting a fighter plane or cutter boat donated from the Navy to house and show off at the museum… his museum.

He also was determined to establish a veterans memorial cemetary at the site as well. Unfortunately, he passed before that time came but it was with great pride that I read (thanks AK) an article in a recent publication detailing the launch of that memorial cemetery.

Papa is looking down and is beaming in pride at one of his final wishes being fulfilled and that just makes me smile.

Howcast is a website where users upload videos explaining how to do things.

From how to fry an egg on the sidewalk to how to interpret body language to… well, just about anything… check them out. Man, what would life have been like with this in high school?

And my personal favorite — How to Pretend you’re a real New Yorker:

Bring back the Uptick Rule!

by Ethan on March 17, 2009

Vaca was awesome but now I’m sloggin’ through an email inbox stuffed with emails… ugh… so this is a quick post with video…

Bring Back The Uptick Rule!… if it was in place this fall, maybe we wouldn’t have seen the precipitous drop in the financial stocks as the short sellers beat ‘em down. Hat tip to Andrew Sullivan for finding this nifty little video explaining exactly what the Uptick rule is, how it works and why it’s important…

Treating PTSD… via ecstasy?

by Ethan on March 10, 2009

That’s what a psychiatrist in South Carolina has been working on…

Tthe mind altering effects of ecstasy seems to speed the process of a break through when dealing with the debilitating disease that is PTSD. The FDA approved his trial and use of MDMA (ecstasy’s clinical name) and a patient reports profound success which he describes:

It’s an extremely positive thing. I feel so lucky that I got to take part in the project… It’s basically like years of therapy in two or three hours. You can’t understand it until you’ve experienced it.

About that creativity

by Ethan on March 9, 2009

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of “Eat, Pray, Love”, did a talk on the TED series recently about creativity… about where she thinks it comes from and how she works through her process when dealing with a sometimes elusive character that is creativity.

As a creative person myself, a lot of what she covers in this 19 minutes really resonated with me… what about you? Take a look:

Talk about tough… picking a name for a dog, child (I can imagine), or business is tough stuff, no doubt about it.

For “The Business”, we thought we had a name and then with the help of our copywriter, came up with another, then another, then another and another still. He assured us that we would be happier with our decision after going through this process but that still doesn’t mean that it was easy.

Having picked the name a couple of weeks ago, which feels like months, we are happy with it and are ready to announce it to the world… [click to continue…]

Get yer T-Shirts here!

by Ethan on March 5, 2009

First off, no, selling t-shirts is NOT “The Business”.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way…

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of selling really cool t-shirts online… and from what this blog post shows (that I just stumbled upon), I’m not the only one.

I can’t get over how many different t-shirt sellers there are out there with affiliate programs so you, me and anyone else we know could put up a website, drive some traffic to it and start makin’ coin sellin’ t-shirts. Scroll through the post linked to above and at the bottom are at least 15 different t-shirt affiliate programs that you could become a part of right now.

If the wife and I weren’t so neck deep in the development of our business, which we’ll have more info for you shortly on, I’d jump right in.
